An Adventure in Detail and Perspective By CATHY HORYN
Next year the Calvin Klein company expects to generate $6 billion in retail sales, a small fraction of which — about $40 million — will come from sales of the runway collections designed by its star Francisco Costa.
Mr. Costa’s collection, based on cubic and prism forms, included coats and dresses in glossy white silks and wools that were creased or molded with a shape, as though the shape had been memorized by the garment.Very often the sleeves looked square, a shape repeated in the grid pattern of glistening silver tops and the cube heels of the silver and white patent leather shoes. Some of the dresses resembled floating pods. But the admirable thing about the collection was the level of research into the materials — including latex, wire mesh and new technical silks — and the quality of Mr. Costa’s presentation. Some of the silvery white shifts and sleek pants outfits are stunning.

Calvin Klein Collection Resort 2009

Francisco Costa presented the Calvin Klein Collection for Resort 2009 on Monday, May 19 at 10:00 am at the Calvin Klen show space (205 West 39th street). Camilla Nickerson styled this show, and the fall 2008 collection. Kasia Struss & Vlada were in the show.

To do this weekend

1)Sissy Spacek will appear in person for a special screening of her breakthrough performance in Terrence Malick's BADLANDS (1973) on Saturday, April 26 at 1:05pm, at the IFC Center shown in a studio archive print. Following the screening, Sissy and the film's executive producer, Edward R. Pressman, will take part in a conversation about the making of the film, its legacy and its place in their careers. IFC Center: 323 6th ave (at 3rd street), (212)924-7771.

2)Gummo is playing at midnight on Friday April 25 & Saturday April 26 at the IFC Center. On October 17, 2007 Janet Maslin of the New York Times wrote:

October is early, but not too early to acknowledge Harmony Korine's ''Gummo'' as the worst film of the year. No conceivable competition will match the sourness, cynicism and pretension of Mr. Korine's debut feature.

Well, sourness, cynicism & pretension are three of my favorite things. Plus, Gummo was styled by Chloe Sevigny. The bleached hair, eyebrows & nipples tape inspired the hair, makeup & pasties in Steven Meisel's brilliant August 2006 Italian Vogue editorial (stylist: Camilla Nickerson), starring Iselin Steiro & Natasa Vojnovic. And there is nothing sour, cynical or pretentious about great fashion photography that fucks with gender & social class while showing the latest in designer fashions. It's just major.

3)Visit the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Located at 900 Washington Avenue (Carroll St x Crown Street), Brooklyn (ph:718-623-7200).The magnolia trees are blooming as well as the Sekiyama cherry blossoms. Hours: Weekends and holidays: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
4)Takashi Murakami at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Open Saturday & Sunday from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, at 200 Eastern Parkway (At Washington Ave), Brooklyn (ph: (718) 638-5000).
5)Jeff Koons on the roof of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The works are set in the The Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden, which offers a spectacular view of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline. Booze & Diet Coke and snacks/sandwiches are available from 10:00 a.m. until closing, including Friday and Saturday evenings. Met hours:Saturday 9:30 a.m.–9:00 p.m., Sunday 9:30 a.m.–5:30 p.m. The Met is located at 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street, ph: 212-535-7710.
